The best seat in the house is inside an 87-foot dome.
Cosm opened its first immersive entertainment venue at Los Angeles' Hollywood Park in July 2024, bringing NBA games into "Shared Reality" — an 87-foot-diameter, 12K+ LED dome experience that does not require headsets or AR devices. The NBA had first partnered with Cosm in February 2023, making it the first professional sports league to enter the shared reality format. The system uses Cosm's proprietary CX System to produce immersive feeds from multiple in-venue camera positions — behind the bench, under the rim, pitch-side — that are captured at Cosm's Salt Lake City production facility and broadcast to the dome in real time. A second venue opened in Dallas at Grandscape. In October 2025, the NBA and Cosm extended their partnership through 2030, expanding Cosm's production mandate to include national games on ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock, and Prime Video during the 2025-26 season, as well as All-Star, Playoffs, and Finals events. TNT Sports also entered a multi-year broadcast partnership with Cosm, bringing NHL and US Soccer alongside the NBA. Three additional venues planned: Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland. Status: two venues operational (LA, Dallas) from 2024; five by 2027.
Why it matters
Cosm represents a genuine new distribution format, not an incremental upgrade to existing viewing. The 87-foot dome without headsets solves the adoption barrier that held back VR sports for a decade — it delivers immersion at a social scale, in a venue where the crowd atmosphere is part of the product. The commercial model is novel: Cosm sells tickets to watch games that are already available for free or on subscription, which means it is pricing the experiential premium over at-home viewing. If fans consistently pay for that premium, it validates a new revenue layer for leagues and broadcasters — one that does not cannibalise existing rights but adds to them. The risk is unit economics: dome venues are capital-intensive and geographically limited. The expansion from 2 to 5 venues tests whether the model is replicable beyond marquee NBA markets.
