Manchester City x YBVR

The stadium comes to you. VR, immersive, always on.

Manchester City partnered with YBVR to launch City Space — a VR experience available on the Xtadium platform for Meta Quest headsets. The product offers 180° immersive video content from both men's and women's City matches, first-person perspective access to areas of the Etihad Stadium normally closed to the public, and behind-the-scenes content updated continuously throughout the season. The YBVR Xtadium platform is purpose-built for sports VR: it handles the high-bandwidth streaming requirements of 180° video at sufficient resolution for headset display, manages content rights across geographies, and provides the fanzone interface where multiple events are accessible in one virtual environment. City Space represents one of the most complete VR sports implementations in European football — technically well-constructed, with genuine depth of content across both the men's and women's squads. Status: production, available on Meta Quest. Launched 2025.
Why it matters

City Space is technically accomplished and commercially ambiguous in equal measure. The product quality is not the constraint — the constraint is audience behaviour. Watching sport in VR requires putting on a headset: an active, intentional act that competes directly with the passive, frictionless consumption of highlights on a phone. The install base of Meta Quest headsets, while growing, remains orders of magnitude smaller than the smartphone audience that Manchester City's content reaches via Instagram or YouTube. City Space can be exceptional as an experience and marginal in scale simultaneously — those two things are not in tension with each other. The metric that would resolve the question — actual headset hours per subscriber, not downloads or sign-ups — will not be disclosed. What matters strategically is whether City is building a sustainable VR product or maintaining optionality in a format that may or may not reach critical mass.
