Nike x Google (Agentic Commerce)
The sports store moves inside the AI conversation. No app, no redirect.
Nike integrates its catalogue into Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, making products purchasable directly in the Gemini app and AI Mode on Search — without leaving the conversation. Multi-item cart with checkout via Google Wallet: from inspiration to purchase without switching screens. Launching in June 2026 timed to the World Cup for boots, kits and fan apparel. Nike is the flagship brand in the rollout alongside Walmart, Sephora and Target. Key structure: Gemini handles discovery and cart assembly; Nike retains the merchant of record, customer data and the post-purchase relationship.
Why it matters
SeatGeek in ChatGPT (Issue #1) showed intent interception at the ticketing level. Nike scales the model to the entire sports retail category. The structural difference from the OpenAI model: Universal Commerce Protocol preserves the merchant of record, solving the disintermediation problem that had held brands back. The implication for clubs and rights holders is direct: if Nike sells inside Gemini, investment in owned e-commerce loses centrality for anyone not present in the AI layer. Brands that do not enter Universal Commerce Protocol in the next 12 months risk becoming algorithmically invisible at peak demand moments.
