Atlético de Madrid partnered with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to deploy an AI-native network infrastructure at Riyadh Air Metropolitano — one of the most technically ambitious venue connectivity projects in European football. The implementation covers 1,500+ Wi-Fi 7 access points managed via HPE AIOps: an AI layer that monitors network performance in real time, predicts and prevents faults before they affect users, optimises bandwidth allocation dynamically based on crowd density and event type, and automates energy consumption reduction. The result is a stadium network that self-manages across match days, concerts, and off-peak operations without manual intervention from IT staff. Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) delivers theoretical speeds up to 46 Gbps and significantly reduced latency compared to Wi-Fi 6E, enabling new use cases including real-time in-venue AR experiences and high-density streaming. HPE's AIOps layer sits on HPE Aruba Networking infrastructure. Status: production, deployed at Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Announced February 16, 2026, the rollout runs in two phases across the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons and has been extended to the club's Sport City training facility and High-Performance Center.
Why it matters

This is infrastructure AI, not application AI — and it is arguably more consequential for the long-term economics of stadium operations than any fan-facing feature. A self-managing network that predicts faults and optimises energy use reduces operational costs continuously, compounding over a venue's lifetime. The blueprint implication is real: every new stadium or major renovation now has a reference architecture to justify AI-native networking as standard, not premium. The risks are three-fold: infrastructure lock-in (replacing HPE becomes a venue-level project, not a software switch); the cyber exposure surface expands significantly when 1,500+ connected access points are centrally managed by an AI system; and the energy-saving KPIs declared in the partnership announcement have not been independently verified.
