AI doesn't narrate the game. It keeps the league standing while it airs.
Presidio renewed a multi-year technology partnership with the NHL that touches the league's operational backbone, not the fan layer. At its centre is the VTOC (Virtual Technology Operations Center), a cloud control system that unifies dozens of production workflows and venue feeds into a single interface, supporting the broadcast of more than 1,300 games a season. The NHL Draft Application runs on a hybrid-cloud environment and centralises Operations, Clubs, Communications, Central Scouting and Central Registry in one platform, handling pick submissions, announcements and trades in real time (in use at the Buffalo Draft, 26-27 June). The NHL Watch Comms App, built with Apple on Apple Watch, sends real-time haptic notifications to on-ice officials: period countdowns, penalty expirations, remaining clock time. It is already used by 95% of on-ice officials.

While Wimbledon, the Tour de France and the World Cup push AI toward the fan-facing story, the NHL pushes it in the opposite direction: into the plant that makes the broadcast possible. The VTOC observes the venue as a single system rather than a sum of subsystems, and that is the real shift, less spectacular and more consequential. The risk is concentration: a single integrator simultaneously controls broadcast, draft and officiating communications. The Watch Comms App is already critical infrastructure at 95% adoption, which means a failure does not degrade the experience, it interrupts it. The same question raised by Atletico x HPE (Issue #1) returns here at league scale: who controls the stack when the stack is the condition for the event to exist?
