The DFL added "Captain" to the official Bundesliga app, a conversational AI assistant developed with AWS. The dialogue interface gives access to live statistics, historical match data, tactical analyses, trivia and video highlights, in German and English. Fans query the system about matches, clubs and players: to a request such as "show me all of Harry Kane's headed goals", Captain responds with a personalised video playlist. The system generates recommendations based on in-app behaviour and preferred clubs, and includes a gamification mode, Coach Mode, with a daily quiz that adapts to the user's level and country-based leaderboards. During the summer break Captain also draws on data from the 2026 World Cup and past editions.

DFL x AWS belonged to Issue #0 as a broadcast automation case. "Captain" is a distinct deployment and shows where that same partnership has arrived: from production automation to a conversational assistant that generates personalised content on demand. The Bundesliga was among the first leagues to bring GenAI into production while others were still testing, and this case confirms the trajectory. With Wimbledon and the Tour de France, Captain completes the cycle's pattern: AI as a companion that builds each fan their own version of the content. That it draws on World Cup data during the break says something more: a league's assistant does not stop at the league's borders, it tends to become the interface through which the fan queries all of football. The open question is lock-in: once a league's companion becomes the habit, the fan stops looking elsewhere.
