ATP × Sportradar × Arwen AI

AI becomes the first line of defence for athletes online.

In July 2024, ATP, Tennis Data Innovations (TDI), and Sportradar launched Safe Sport — the first system in professional sport to integrate AI moderation, education, and investigation into a unified athlete protection service. The technology backbone is Arwen AI, which processes 600,000 comments per day across Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok in 29 languages, automatically hiding abusive content in real time before athletes or their followers are exposed to it. The service is available on an opt-in basis to the Top 250 ATP singles players and Top 50 doubles players at no cost. In parallel, Sportradar's intelligence analysts actively investigate flagged threats to identify perpetrators and pursue real-world consequences. An educational programme covering online abuse handling, platform risk mitigation, and integrity on social media completes the three-pillar model. The TDI-Sportradar multi-year data partnership began in January 2024; this integrity layer extends that relationship. First-year results (August 2025): more than 1 in 10 comments on players' posts were classified as abusive; in extreme cases, the rate reached 50%. Status: production from July 2024, Group 1 players covered.
Por qué importa

Safe Sport is the first service that combines three previously separate functions — automated content moderation, athlete education, and investigative follow-through — into a single operational layer. The 1-in-10 baseline abuse rate revealed in first-year results is striking: it confirms that the problem is not edge-case behaviour but a structural feature of athlete social media exposure. The cross-platform reach (600,000 comments/day across five platforms) sets a new scale benchmark for AI-powered sports integrity. The open governance question is who defines the boundaries of moderation across 29 languages and cultural contexts — Arwen AI's classification models are trained on data that may not reflect local norms for what constitutes abuse versus criticism. Sportradar's investigative layer adds accountability but also creates questions about the threshold for investigation and who decides when real-world escalation is warranted.
