Adidas x FIFA (Trionda Connected Ball)
The ball knows where it is. 500 times per second.
The Trionda — the official 2026 World Cup match ball produced by Adidas — integrates a 500Hz IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) chip mounted laterally inside one of its four panels. The sensor transmits to the VAR system in real time: ball position, speed, spin rate, trajectory and — critically — the precise kick point, the millisecond when the foot contacts the ball. Combined with the 3D player avatars (Lenovo/Hawk-Eye), the system determines offside across the entire body of the player from the exact moment of contact. The previous 50cm threshold has been eliminated: every centimetre, across every body part, from the precise millisecond of touch.

The ball becomes an IoT node in the AI officiating chain. The computational kick point replaces the linesman's visual interpretation on one of football's most contested decisions, live across 104 matches in front of six billion viewers. The question no public document has addressed remains: when the system produces a controversial determination in a semifinal, on what basis can a coach challenge it? The MLB challenge system (Issue #3) at least has a procedural answer. Automated VAR does not yet.
